Selvapiana, Chianti Rufina 2007

Tasted April 2009
Another long-standing shop favourite this whose quality was re-affirmed for me at Vinitaly. The Rufina sub-region of Chianti is higher and cooler than the rest of the zone, so should produce wines of greater elegance. Selvapiana is maybe the finest producer in the region and has a long history of producing top class wines at brilliant prices (due to the lesser reputation of the zone as a whole, the wines cannot command the same high prices as top quality Chianti Classico). 2007 is a vintage to watch out for in Tuscany. The wines throughout the area (but especially in Montalcino) are exceptional and noticeably more concentrated than the '06s.

Tasting Note This has quite a peppery nose (something I've not come across with Chianti before). The palate is braod and well structured with fresh acidity and grainy tannins. Dark fruits, cherries and hints of wild strawberry with ripe, rich fruits on the finish. This is concentrated and superbly made - there may not be a better wine in the shop for the price!
Cellaring This wine is Selvapiana's "drinking" wine but the excellence of the vintage and winemaking mean that it will cellar at leat ten years, whilst being approachable in its youth
If you like this, why not try...This is one of the first '07 Chiantis to hit our shelves but the Fontodi Chianti Classico 2007 is well worth waiting for. If you can't wait, but you like this style, then head for Rioja and try Palacios' Rioja La Montesa |
