Tasted March 2009
I tasted this a couple of months ago and was going to write a tasting note about it straight away, but I loved it so much that we sold it all before I had a chance! It's back in stock now, so I can rave about it properly.
Yves Cuilleron is a mechanic with no wine education. This sounds a little un-promising I admit, but his wines are supersonic! Once he took over the family winery, he went right back to basics and re-appraised every step of the vine growing and winemaking process, evaluating best practice and making the wines with an immense amount of love and attention to detail whilst retaining traditional techniques. Although his speciality is Condrieu, he also has holdings in Cote Rotie, St Joseph, Cornas and St Peray.

Tasted March 2009

Grape: 100% Viognier

Region: Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes. This covers the vineyards around the Northern Rhone, mostly to the West but in this case the vineyards are mostly just outside Condrieu.

Soil Type: Granite, alluvium

Winemaking: Grapes are organically farmed, and picked and then undergo alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless stee. 6 months maturation on its lees in vats and barriques.

ABV: 13.5%

Tasting Note
This wine made me sit up and take notice more than any other has for some time! Light gold in colour with tropical fruit on the nose and rich summer blossom. Medium to full bodied with high acidity but a rich, oily character that screams "Viognier genius" from the rooftops. Floral peaches, spice and oak with bright pineapple and mango on the long, lifted finish. This is better than some Condrieu I've tasted for twice the price. Stunning.

Cellaring
Viognier isn't really built to age, but you could cellar this for a couple of years

If you like this, why not try... buying a case, that's what I'd do!
