Syrah / Shiraz

Filter

What is Syrah (also called Shiraz)?

Syrah (pronounced See-rah) is a bold red grape that makes seriously rich, full-bodied bottles. In France - particularly the Rhône Valley - it goes by Syrah, but Australians and most New World winemakers call it Shiraz.

Since we stock both Old and New World styles, you'll see either name pop up depending on where the bottle's from.

What does Syrah / Shiraz taste like?

This stuff doesn't mess about. Deep colour, firm tannins, big flavours - blackberries, black pepper, liquorice, smoked meat, dark chocolate.

Warmer regions like Australia's Barossa or McLaren Vale push out riper, fruit-loaded versions with sweeter spice. Properly lush.

Cooler spots like France's Northern Rhône? More restrained and savoury. You get earthy, smoky notes and that signature peppery finish.

Where does it come from?

  • France - The Rhône Valley is where this grape originally made its name.

  • Australia - Huge here, especially across South Australia in places like Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, and McLaren Vale.

  • South Africa - The Western Cape's producing some fantastic bottles from Stellenbosch and Swartland.

  • United States - California's warmer climate suits it brilliantly.

  • Other regions - Chile, Argentina - plenty of countries have embraced it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Syrah and Shiraz?

Same grape, different label. France uses Syrah, Australia prefers Shiraz. The main split is style - warmer places make riper, juicier versions.

Which regions should I explore?

Northern Rhône in France if you want structure. Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale in Australia for bold fruit. South Africa's worth checking out too as there’s a distinctive edge to those bottles.

What style of wine is this?

Red, usually full-bodied with weight behind it. Cooler climates sometimes dial things back a bit depending on the year.

What food pairs well with it?

Grilled meats are brilliant - lamb, steak, anything charred. Works with hearty stews and BBQ too. Fruitier Shiraz handles spiced or smoky Mediterranean dishes really well.
